Clark Datchler-Fishing For Souls (1992)

ORIGINAL POSTING DATE: January 26, 2012

Not blogging for a couple of days indeed felt like I'd gone fishing somewhere..... Following the wonderful 40+ minutes of music that I enjoyed of listening to Clark Datchler's "Raindance", I had to check out his second solo effort immediately thereafter—1992's "Fishing For Souls". I was expecting an album with an entirely new track-listing; instead, I noted that several of the tracks here were the same as they were on "Raindance"—"State Of Play", "Crown Of Thorns", "The Last Emotion", "Widow", "It's Better This Way", and "Raindance" itself. There is a bit of difference, however, such as the subtle deeper piano melody for "Crown Of Thorns". In fact, on some versions of this album that I came across, these tracks are listed as remixes, although I wouldn't exactly agree that there's much 'remixing' going on. I know very little about the details of Clark's solo discography since he left JOHNNY HATES JAZZ, but I seem to think that either the three new songs and the alternate versions of the older songs on this album were originally intended to be part of "Raindance" or "Fishing For Souls" was incomplete—more songs were scheduled, but didn't make it in time for its release. I've discovered that there's even been a remastered re-release of "Fishing For Souls" with different cover artwork and ten tracks instead of nine found here, although again, it's basically Clark's "Raindance" album all over again. I did love one of the three new tracks in particular very much—"Broken Spirit". But my own spirit wasn't broken by the fact that there wasn't a lot more to get into this time around. With me being a JOHNNY HATES JAZZ fan, there's nothing that I can hate about "Fishing For Souls":

1. State Of Play
2. Broken Spirit
3. Child To Be
4. Crown Of Thorns
5. The Last Emotion
6. Fishing For Souls
7. Widow
8. Raindance
9. It's Better This Way
