Colonel Red-Keep Walkin (2011)

ORIGINAL POSTING DATE: January 10, 2012

It sure would've been nice if PRIDE 'N POLITIX had still been together after all these years following their "Changes" release, but in a way, they still are, since their former front man, Nikki Romillie, is still performing.....and singing better than ever! I felt like I couldn't continue on with the rest of the artists I planned to feature this week until I got my hands on either one or both of Colonel Red's solo albums. In this case, I got both, but his newest one, last year's "Keep Walkin", was the first one I could get. Listened to this beauty all the way through Sunday evening, then the first part of it again yesterday afternoon, and once more in the wee hours of this morning, which was when I enjoyed the music the most. Something about the tranquility of the night that always opens up the human senses and makes them more receptive to sound. Had the headphones on for private listening instead of the stereo speakers, so it was a much different experience..... More intimate, I would say. Colonel Red, as Nikki prefers to be called now, has successfully made the conversion over to the contemporary world of neo-soul, although there's still quite a bit of jazz (there's that 'J' word again!) and even some hip-hop and funk going on here and there to spice the music up just the way I like it. "Rain A Fall" is just one of many glorious moments on this album; it's the first one that stood out to me. Then it was the duet on Track #9's "Gimme A Minute" that I adored—the light drum 'n bass beat, plus the sensual voice of the guest vocalist and the raw, no-nonsense lyrics to the colorful story that she recites as the music plays. "Can We Work It Out?" would be a third one worth playing at least couple of times, but if I gave that suggestion for this song, then I may as well suggest it for all of the other ones too:

1. I'm Colonel Red
2. Free Feeling
3. Rain A Fall
4. I Will Be There
5. Driving Me Crazy
6. Systematic Mathamatik
7. Pressure
8. Living My Dream
9. Gimme A Minute (Feat. Ursula Rucker)
10. Keep Walkin
11. Can We Work It Out?
12. Each And Every Way
13. Woman
14. The Anomaly
15. 'I'
