VACANCIES-Tantrum (2007)

ORIGINAL POSTING DATE: February 2, 2012

Nor will you be seeing any vacancy in the "Music Spectrum" posting archives for February 2 either. If you thought that the music on THE VACANCIES debut album was loud and wild and rollicking, then their next one is even more of a 'temper tantrum'—literally and figuratively. The screaming mouth with the big white teeth pictured in the cover artwork above does all the talking for you. That cover, by the way, is uncannily similar to the cover of Alanis Morissette's "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie", where it too shows a detailed close-up of her mouth (you can see it here on my blog, as I previously featured that album as well). And these guys certainly sound like they're junkies.....and not of the infatuation kind either. I suppose I should retract that closing statement I made in last night's presentation of "A Beat Missing Or A Silence Added" about these guys not being 'black-hearted'. It was mostly intended to me a silly pun, seeing that they belong to Joan Jett's Blackheart Records music label, but I also mentioned it to summarize what I think the guys felt when they wrote the lyrics and recorded the songs. I sense a little more angst here on "Tantrum" than I did the first time around. So if you're in a bad mood and feel like destroying something or inflicting some kind of injury, this music is all you need in order to alleviate that anger in a healthy way. It's like playing a few intense rounds of "Mortal Kombat" or "Grand Theft Auto" or some other violent Rated M video game; plus, you can reset it as many times as you like once you've beaten it! Nobody gets hurt and everybody wins! Though even if you're not feeling angst-ridden yourself, this is a good album to listen to if you just want to enjoy the hardcore sounds of punk rock. Lyrically, I have no idea what they're trying to communicate on many of the more progressive high-speed jams like "Compound" and "Satyagraha"—I don't even know what the latter one even means, let alone if it's even a real word!—but I can see that they're just wanting to express their passion for music like every other artist:

1. Compound
2. Below Merlot
3. Pride
4. Sick Modern Era
5. Way Out
6. Funeral
7. Satyagraha
8. Believe
9. Strummer
10. Hand Of Fear
11. Distracted
12. Tantrum
13. Shakedown
14. Savior
