X-MEN ARCADE GAME SOUNDTRACK [KONAMI] (1992)

ORIGINAL POSTING DATE: February 14, 2012

Four video game soundtracks in total had been posted by me on the "Final Fantasy Forum" before the 'Megaupload meltdown'. 1995's "Clock Tower" was one of them; the soundtrack to the classic six-player arcade version of "X-Men" was another. Doesn't this one bring back some warm memories? It sure does for me! In that era where side-scrolling fighting games like "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", "Captain America & The Avengers", and "The Simpsons" were hugely popular, "X-Men" was probably my #1 favorite. I remember when I was in my early teens, could beat the entire game from start to finish by myself if I happened to be at the arcade on a slow weekday night (yes, I'm bragging, aren't I?). Had used Nightcrawler in my earliest playing days, then eventually fell in love with Storm and played with her about 90% of the time. Playing with the other characters—Dazzler, Wolverine, Cyclops and especially Colossus—often proved to be a challenge for me; I thought they were all a bit too slow compared to Nightcrawler and Storm. I do think that Colossus, however, had the best Mutant Power of them all, since it was immune to the repelling capabilities of Magneto's projectiles. Looking back, there were always a ton of Colossus players, a good amount of Wolverine, Storm and Cyclops players, but not too many Nightcrawler or Dazzler players.....at least at the arcade I frequented on the weekends. Those Sentinels were quite small, weren't they? And they weren't anywhere near as powerful as the ones featured on the original Fox cartoon series. My favorite enemy? Whendigo, because I could beat him up without having to use up any of my mutant powers. And he was one of the easiest to beat, since he had no projectile weapons. Could do the same against Pyro, White Queen, Nimrod, Juggernaut, Mystique (disguised as Magneto) and any one of those three Egyptian statues at the end of that temple in Stage 6 (for the longest time, I thought they were mutants of some sort too). Fighting The Blob, that giant flying wasp in the jungle on Stage 3 and that ugly mechanical bat in the cave on Stage 4 was a different story. The Blob was too slow and hard to knock down while the wasp and the bat created a nest of other wasps and bats, respectively, to prolong the battle and make it increasingly difficult; thus, employing the Mutant Power was always necessary. Favorite moments of the game? One: fighting those six pink copies of Pyro on Stage 6 in that temple (now that's a point where it's best to play as Colossus). Two: having to battle all of the bosses from Stage 2 through Stage 6 simultaneously before battling both Mystique (again, disguised as Magneto) then Magneto himself at the end of Stage 7. And three: the feel-good ending theme, of course, which happens to be my favorite tune from the whole game:

1. Attract Mode
2. Boss Battle
3. Ending
4. Game Over
5. Magneto Battle
6. Name Entry
7. Stage 1
8. Stage 2
9. Stage 3
10. Stage 4
11. Stage 5
12. Stage 6
13. Stage 7
14. Stage Clear
