Janet Jackson-Discipline (2008)

ORIGINAL POSTING DATE: February 17, 2016

I could use some of that myself—discipline in restraining myself from listening to this album any further! Even with all of the new artists I've been discovering—and the old ones that I've been rediscovering—practically this entire month of February, I haven't forgotten about my favorites ones whom I grew up listening to from my childhood. So from time to time, I've been checking in on a lot them and keeping their music alive, and that's especially been holding true for the lovely Miss Janet Jackson! When I got her tenth solo album a while back, I had no idea it would become the addiction that it's turned out to be some eight years later! It all started the day my brother directed my attention to the music video for this album's hot opening track called "Feedback". Me being a dance music lover—and being somebody who just savors music with infectious beats altogether—my ears were instantly hooked while my eyes were glued to the TV screen while Janet and her army of dancers put on a fabulous show of choreography amidst the cool special effects of them in the cosmic, outer space setting. Not sure if it's the pounding drum beats or the glitzy electronic arrangement or those high-pitched riffs from the main chorus or the bouncy bass that I like the most, but the tantalizing trio is half the reason why this jam keeps getting the playback treatment on my car stereo or my iPod or whatever audio device I can play it on! The other half would be Miss Janet herself singing the sexy lyrics—'strum me like a guitar, blow out my amplifier, when you hear some feedback, you go and take it higher' my favorite lines from the awesome hook, plus the bridge when she goes 'flyer than a pelican, find another chick better than I don't see her, cause my swag is serious, something heavy like a first day period'. And I love the almost monotonic, robotic style of her delivery of 'before we go any more further, let me let you in on a secret baby', plus the distorted digitized vocal effects of 'feed-f-f-f-f-feedback-back' heard towards the end, both adding to the cosmic theme of the music video (these little nuances always add to my overall entertainment value). I've fallen in love with "Feedback" so much that I was totally undisciplined in my acquisition of more than a dozen dance remixes—nineteen to be exact—which I've included as a bonus treat. My favorite remix hands down so far is the 8+ minute 'Ralphi Rosario Electroshok Club' remix—so far, because there's still a gazillion dance remixes out there beyond the nineteen I've already collected that I haven't heard yet! And the hip-hop flavored 'So So Def Remix' remix featuring rappers Busta Rhymes and Fabolous collaborating with r&b singer Ciara is cool, too. Further discipline is required for me to avoid playing just that opening track over and over, but when I do manage to exercise it, I'm able to enjoy the rest of this album's other hot jams. Like "LUV", the lovely follow-up to the title track. Whether she spells it three-letters long or four-letters long, it's a lovely short-and-sweet three minutes listening to Janet merrily singing about it. And I love the beat, too! I'd gotten excited when I saw "Rock With U" as part of the track-listing, believing it to be a remake of her late older brother's 1979 unforgettable classic. Well, that sure would've been a nice tribute, but Janet's rockin' it her own way on this one, and I like it—a pure dance jam with a lofty air about it while the chords do have a striking similarity to Michael's "Rock With You". I need even more discipline to refrain from too many playbacks of Track #8's "2nite". A song with a simple title? Sounds simple enough, but it totally belies the pop thrill ride that it explodes into once the bombastic electro club beat enters through the speakers and Janet slams it down with that killer hook of 'something in the air has got me feeling like I'm ready tonight'! Another of my favorite hot picks is "The 1", a fine collaboration with female rap star Missy 'Misdemeanor' Elliot (I've always liked the 'misdemeanor' part her stage name), who lays down the slick rhymes like it's nothing (I like it when she foes 'what I gotta do, what I gotta say, to the bedroom O-K-K-K' in the opening verse). It wouldn't be a Janet Jackson album without at least one terrific slow jam to soothe and smooth you out, and the title track does exactly what it's designed to do—get you all cozy for a night of love-making in that same bedroom that Missy Elliot rapped about three tracks before. Besides the actual songs, I got even more entertainment value from the various interlude snippets up and down the album, particularly the ones where Janet is in dialogue with her computer friend named Kilko ("I.D." and "Good Morning Janet", where the pair have a heart-to-heart about a guy she's trying to get over), plus the ladies-night-out segment "Bathroom Break" where Janet says 'we go break some thangs, and we go shake some thangs'. As you can see, I have so much positive feedback to offer about "Discipline", and I expect many of you Janet Jackson fans out there have a lot of good feedback to give about it as well:
